New and improved: bookshelf and Carnival of Mathematics

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Two things today: first, I’ve updated my “bookshelf” (go to http://www.mathlesstraveled.com/, scroll down a bit and look in the right margin). The books come from my LibraryThing library, and I’ve now figured out how to write reviews of the books and have them show up directly in my bookshelf! I’ve added one or two reviews but plan to add more over the coming weeks. I also plan to write blog posts reviewing a few particular books I’ve acquired recently. If you’re looking for a fun math book, I hope you’ll find this a good place to start!

I’m also excited by the rebirth of the Carnival of Mathematics, which had fallen on hard times recently. Mike Croucher of Walking Randomly has graciously volunteered to take over organizational duties. Jason Dyer will be hosting the next one on November 6.

Carnival of Mathematics #53

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Welcome to the 53rd Carnival of Mathematics! A somewhat shorter carnival this time, but I greatly enjoyed reading the submissions I did get, and I hope you do too.

Carnival of Mathematics: here, this Friday!

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I will be hosting the Carnival of Mathematics here this Friday (June 5). Please send in your submissions!

IMPORTANT: it’s a long story but I am not yet listed as the host on the blog carnival site, so DO NOT submit posts using the blog carnival submission form! Please leave your submissions as a comment on this post, or send me an email (byorgey at gmail). If you already submitted something using the blog carnival submission form, please re-submit it to me.

The submission deadline is 8am on Friday, June 5. Submit before the deadline, or else be prepared to face my… um… mild displeasure!

Carnival of Mathematics and other links

The 47th Carnival of Mathematics has been put together by jd2718; go give it a read! Some of my favorite posts include factoring by puzzles, teaching binary numbers, the 2009 game, cliques of dichotomies, but there is lots of other interesting stuff as well.

Kalid Azad of BetterExplained has a great article about developing your intuition for mathematics that I also wanted to share.

Finally, here is xkcd’s useful guide to converting to metric.
