Carnival of Mathematics #53

Welcome to the 53rd Carnival of Mathematics! A somewhat shorter carnival this time, but I greatly enjoyed reading the submissions I did get, and I hope you do too.

  3. Gah – I missed this carnival because was on vacation. Looks great though.

As for the Wolfram Alpha bug. You can’t (and indeed shouldn’t) accept any mathematical result from a computer on trust – no matter what system they use. For example, here’s details of an integral that Mathematica (which powers Wolfram Alpha) fails with at the moment.

This is no big deal – Do you accept results from humans without checking them? Sometimes you do and sometimes you don’t – depends on the importance of the problem and how sure you need to be of it’s correctness.

Computers aren’t magic – they built and programmed by humans and so they can be wrong too. I like bugs in math software – they force us to always think about the results spat out by computers.
